The rand was steady against the dollar early on Friday, having pared most of the strong gains it and other emerging market currencies made in the aftermath of the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision to maintain monetary stimulus.
Consumer inflation in South Africa accelerated to 6.4 percent year-on-year in August from 6.3 percent in July, data showed on Wednesday.
Fitch Ratings moved South Africa's investment-grade rating a notch closer to junk, saying its economic growth performance and prospects have deteriorated amid social and political tensions.
