A consortium between leading engineering contractor Orascom Construction PLC and Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation has signed a contract worth around $800 million to execute construction work at the first phase of line four of the Cairo Metro.

According to the contract, the scope of the work includes signaling, building a power supply, establishing telecommunications, building a platform screen door, automatic fare collection, track work, and building a depot, a statement by Orascom Construction read on Tuesday.

The contract was signed with the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT); Orascom's share of the turnkey contract is $350 million.

The first phase of this underground line will extend for 19 kilometres, through 16 stations, between the center of Greater Cairo and the Pyramids area in Giza.

The project to construct this mass rapid transport metro line’s first phase will be funded by the Japanese International Corporation Agency via a Japanese yen loan, under the condition of the Special Technical Economic Partnership, which is the first to be implemented in Egypt, according to the statement.

“This contract is a testament to our strength in the transportation sector and builds on our longstanding involvement in the development of the Cairo Metro,” Orascom Construction CEO Osama Bishai said.

“This project also positions us for future work in this sector, ranging from new phases of the Cairo Metro to new railway projects,” he added.

Orascom Construction’s recent cooperation with the NAT included delivering phase four B of Metro line three earlier this year, extending across around seven kilometres. The project was executed by Orascom and the Egyptian Arab Contractors.

In August last year, Orascom Construction’s consortium with German Bombardier Transportation and the Arab Contractors signed a deal with the NAT to execute two monorail lines to connect East Cairo with the New Administrative Capital and 6 of October City with Giza.
